How do I pack my goods for international shipping?

You can save money if you do the bulk of the packing on your own. Limit yourself to non-fragile items such as books, linens, clothing and shoes as well as replaceable items such as plates, dishes (not fine china or expensive silverware), and small kitchen appliances. These items will be cheaper to replace in case of damage, and will save you the cost of hiring labororers to pack for you. Also pack your own jewelry, family heirlooms, photo albums, or other priceless items yourself.

Leave the furniture, mattresses, and heavy appliances to be packed by the shipping company.

Get the proper moving boxes for your items, and make sure not to overpack and boxes. Have enough wardrobe boxes for your clothing, as they will save you ironing time later. Save space by tossing in shoes at the bottom of the wardrobe box, but don’t let the box become too heavy or susceptible to fallout from the bottom.

For your replaceable and non-fragile items, save money by using the free boxes that you can obtain from supermarkets and wrapping the items in old newspaper. Take the time to pack everything carefully.

It is important for you to buffer and separate the fragile items that you pack with old newspaper, bubble wrap, sheets, blankets, pillows and towels. Wrap each fragile item separately. Fill in empty spaces to minimize movement during transit. Pack plates and glass objects vertically, rather than flat and stacked. Purchase strong packing tape to help secure your boxes. For the safety of your items, movers are required to inspect each box tendered for shipment, so immediately point out to your mover each and every box that you packed yourself, especially if they include fragile or valuable goods.

The shipping company has the right to refuse to load any box they deem improperly packed. Any improperly packed boxes must be repacked either by you or the mover. All repacking services are subject to additional costs.

How do I “Do It Myself and Save” ?

Shipping overseas can be costly, but here are a few simple steps that can help save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Getting boxes: For many getting free boxes from the local drug or grocery store is an easy cheap way to get started on the packing. Please see the box requirements below for getting used boxes. Plastic bins with lids are also a great way to pack your goods. The main requirements for packing boxes are:

a. Bottoms must be taped and secured b. Must have closable lids c. No food or liquor boxes (may have insect infestation) d. No manufacture labels or shipping labels

You can also save money by purchasing boxes on our website; we offer some of the most competitive prices for box packages with free shipping.

Complete your Inventory List
Selecting the items you are going to ship overseas is important for determining your shipment size and equipment needed, and can help you save money on shipment costs. Fill out your Inventory List (pdf link ADD LINK) online.

Use your own supplies
If you are doing some or most of your packing, you can save hundreds of dollars by using things you already have to wrap and secure your items. You can use bed linens, towels, pillows and clothing to wrap and pad items in a box. Use caution when wrapping items using newsprint, as the ink can smudge if it rubs off. Blank newsprint, butcher paper or paper towels are better substitutes.

Load and / or Unload your shipping container
If you are shipping enough to require an exclusive container, you have the option to load and/or unload your own container. This is a great way to save money on your shipping cost, but make sure that you have a few people to help with the loading. The container arrives to be loaded on a chassis that is approximately 4 feet from the ground.
